Shipping Container Farm Automation Retrofit
Shipping container farm automation helped modernize an existing commercial growing facility in Alberta without requiring replacement of its original production infrastructure. NuLeaf Farms integrated the Leaf automation platform and Root software to improve irrigation control, environmental management, equipment monitoring, alarm notifications, and remote access. The retrofit created a more reliable and manageable system for commercial kale and Swiss chard production.

Shipping Container Farm Automation Challenge
The existing shipping container farm relied heavily on manual operation. Staff had to regularly check equipment, adjust irrigation schedules, and monitor environmental conditions directly at the facility. This approach required significant operator attention and made it difficult to maintain consistent growing conditions throughout each production cycle.
The lack of remote connectivity also limited the operator’s ability to identify problems quickly. Equipment failures, irrigation interruptions, or changes in environmental conditions could not be reviewed from another location. The customer needed a practical modernization solution that would improve system visibility and reliability while preserving the growing equipment and infrastructure already in place.
NuLeaf’s Automated Container Farm Retrofit
NuLeaf retrofitted the facility with the Leaf automation platform, connecting the existing irrigation equipment, environmental controls, sensors, and other critical operating systems within one centralized control environment.
Automated irrigation scheduling reduced the need for repetitive manual adjustments and helped provide crops with more consistent water and nutrient delivery. Environmental monitoring gave operators improved visibility into production conditions, while alarm notifications made it easier to respond when equipment or operating values moved outside the desired range.
The Root software platform provides access to real-time conditions, historical operating data, system performance, and remote management tools. Instead of monitoring each component separately, operators can review the farm through one connected software platform from any location.
Because NuLeaf worked with the existing infrastructure, the customer was able to modernize the facility without the cost and disruption of replacing the complete growing system.

Remote Monitoring and Production Results
The retrofit reduced manual intervention while improving operational reliability, production consistency, and long-term maintainability. Operators now have better visibility into farm conditions and can identify potential problems earlier.
The upgraded system also makes the facility easier to operate, troubleshoot, and support over time. The customer benefits from modern controlled-environment technology while continuing to use an existing commercial production asset.
The project reflects Alberta’s growing interest in vertical farming and controlled-environment agriculture as tools for dependable, year-round crop production.
